Bucks New University and West London Mental Health NHS Trust launch Institute of Mental Health
A new partnership has been launched between Buckinghamshire New University and West London Mental Health NHS Trust to promote excellence in mental health clinical practice.
The objective of the new Institute of Mental Health is to strengthen the link between clinical research and everyday clinical practice.
Professor Colin Martin from Bucks New University and Dr Craig Ritchie, the Trust’s Research and Development Director, proposed the development of the Institute and are delighted it has now been established.
Professor Martin said: “We need to understand more clearly how to translate key research findings and the best clinical evidence to everyday clinical practice quickly and consistently in order to provide the best possible care to service users.
“Working in partnership with colleagues in research and development as well as clinical and academic colleagues, service users and carers will represent a defining feature of the new institutes’ integrated approach.”
A series of pre-planned monthly seminars hosted by healthcare researchers and field experts will focus on findings and best practice relating to psycho-education in forensic settings, alcohol use and abuse, perinatal mental health, service users engagement and co-production, neurocognitive assessment, restorative justice and physical health care in mental health settings.
Prof Martin adds: “We fully intend to build on our work to ensure mental health service users and carers are at the heart of everything we do and have access to the best services possible that meet their needs.”
The Institute will also support effective workforce and team design and practice development for clinical professionals. Central to this will be the integration of the needs of healthcare professionals and service users into educational curriculum design and redesign to ensure quality and consistency.
